Five ways get WhatsApp media out of a chat, and the right one depends on where the work happens. WhatsApp's own Export Chat with media is a genuine bulk path: it produces one ZIP per chat, it is free, and it is built into the app. Its constraint is the phone — the export lives in the mobile app, runs one chat at a time, and hands back an archive to unpack rather than files on a computer.

The Mastros WhatsApp extension is built for the browser. The extension runs on web.whatsapp.com, downloads a conversation's photos, videos and voice notes in one started-by-hand run, and writes them straight to the computer already in front of you. Saving each file by long-press works everywhere and scales to nothing. Status saver apps solve a different problem entirely, and a phone's file manager only ever holds what auto-download already put there.

Other extensions, and where they beat this one

Several free Chrome extensions download WhatsApp media, and on bulk media alone some of them do more than Mastros does today. WhatSave and WhatsSnap both take several chats in one run and both filter by date; WhatsSnap scans a chat's whole history without scrolling back to load it. Mastros does one chat per run, reaching as far back as the conversation has been scrolled. If bulk media out of many chats is the whole job, one of those is the better tool for it.

What Mastros does that they do not: the same extension also exports group members, recent contacts and chat messages as CSV, JSON or JSONL, and the same account covers Telegram Web and LinkedIn. Downloading all photos from one WhatsApp chat

WhatsApp Web loads a conversation in pieces, and the extension reads what it has already rendered. Open the chat, scroll back to the point in the history you care about, then start Media Download — the photos on screen and above it come down together. A group works the same way.

Downloading WhatsApp voice notes and audio

Voice notes come down in the same run as the photos and videos, grouped with the chat they came from. Once they are files in a folder they can be played in any player, sent to a transcription tool or attached to a case file — none of which WhatsApp allows while the recording sits in a chat bubble.

WhatsApp status savers and what this extension does instead

This is not a status saver. Those are Android apps reading the local cache WhatsApp writes when a status is viewed, and that cache clears after 24 hours. Media Download works on conversations instead — the photos, videos and voice notes inside a chat, which stay until someone deletes them.

Whether the sender knows a WhatsApp download happened

WhatsApp sends no download notification, and the extension adds nothing visible: it never messages, forwards, reacts or joins, because it cannot write to WhatsApp at all. Read receipts and view-once media behave exactly as they always do.
